Abstract

The electrification of vehicle platforms has accelerated the shift from centralized internal combustion drivelines to distributed electric propulsion architectures, in which independently controlled wheel actuators offer new opportunities and new safety obligations. This paper presents a system-level examination of event-driven safety-critical control for distributed electric vehicles, focusing on the coordination of lateral stability management and energy-efficient actuation. Rather than proposing a single control law, the work analyzes the architectural trade-offs that arise when event-triggered stability supervision is coupled with constrained torque allocation across multiple actuators. The discussion addresses the role of safety regions, event conditions, and the sequencing of stability interventions in reducing unnecessary actuation while preserving yaw stability margins. It further examines how such event-driven architectures interact with in-vehicle communication, software certification, and cross-domain data analytics. The paper argues that energy-efficient lateral stability management is not merely a control allocation problem but a socio-technical system design challenge involving robustness, fairness in actuator utilization, lifecycle energy impacts, and regulatory compliance. By integrating perspectives from vehicle dynamics, real-time systems, machine learning governance, and safety engineering, the paper develops a structured research agenda for future distributed electric vehicle platforms. The analysis highlights the importance of treating event-driven safety control as an infrastructural capability rather than a standalone algorithm, with implications for certification, deployment, and policy.
